According to the IMD, the northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Dahanu, Wardha, Raipur, and Motihari. Meteorological forecasts indicate that the system is expected to progress further over the next two to three days, covering parts of Gujarat, additional regions of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, and extending into sections of Madhya Pradesh.
In Mumbai, the monsoon typically arrives by June 11. However, this year it reached the financial capital on June 23, reflecting a delay similar to 2023, when the onset also occurred on the same date. Since the morning hours, intermittent rainfall has been reported across multiple suburban areas including Andheri, Bandra, Malad, Kandivali, Dahisar, Powai, Vikhroli, and Ghatkopar.
Despite the long-awaited arrival bringing relief from humid conditions, the first day of rainfall has also led to disruption across the city. Several incidents of tree fall have been reported in different localities due to rain and gusty winds, raising concerns over urban safety during adverse weather conditions.
One major incident was reported from the Lokhandwala area in Andheri, where a large tree collapsed onto a luxury vehicle parked inside a residential society premises. The vehicle, belonging to actor Khushi Mukherjee, sustained severe damage, particularly to its front section. The sudden collapse occurred amid ongoing rainfall in the suburban belt, causing significant material loss and highlighting vulnerabilities in open parking arrangements during extreme weather events.
Authorities and civic observers have reiterated the need for caution as monsoon activity intensifies, particularly in densely populated urban pockets where infrastructure and vegetation can pose risks during heavy rain and wind conditions. The situation underscores the challenges Mumbai faces annually during monsoon onset, as the city adapts to rapidly changing weather patterns and associated disruptions.
